National Honor Society

The WHH Chapter of the National Honor Society, like its parent affiliate, serves to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.  Our main purpose is stated in our constitution: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."  The WHH chapter, established in 2005, has members join the ranks of the more than one million students that participate in the NHS in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada.

The White House Heritage National Honor Society inducts members in the second semester of the junior year (or qualifying seniors).  Acceptance into the National Honor Society means completing the following steps:

1.    Juniors / Seniors with a 3.5 or higher G.P.A. are invited to an informational meeting during the second semester.  They are requested to fill out a questionnaire and to secure faculty references.

2.    The completed questionnaires are returned to the NHS advisor with the required fee.

3.   Faculty members return the reference forms to the NHS advisor.

4.   The NHS Faculty Committee, consisting of faculty from the various high school departments, meets to review the curriculum and previous precedents to set the standards for admission (number of honors classes required, participation in school activities, etc.).

5.   The NHS Faculty Committee reviews the questionnaires / references and determines admission status.

6.   The building principal approves the recommendations of the NHS Faculty Committee (or returns the suggestions to the committee for reconsideration).

7.   Final invitations / letters of decline are sent to the students.  If a student is not accepted into the National Honor Society, the requested fee will be returned.

Note:  Admission to the National Honor Society is not just based on grade point average.  Students must also have earned credit in several honors courses (in last year’s round of acceptance, students were required to have four honors courses representing at least two areas of study), have demonstrated school / community involvement (community service), and have shown outstanding character in the school (not a discipline problem).

Students admitted to the National Honor Society may be chosen to apply for NHS scholarships during their senior year, and, naturally, NHS recognition is a great resume item for any student.
